Rising sign calculator
Your rising sign (or Ascendant) is the sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon of your exact birthplace, at the exact minute you were born, and it sets the layout of the houses, creating a structure with a logic of its own that will play out across concrete areas of your life. The sign changes every two hours, so —unlike your Sun sign— you need your birth time to know it. Calculate yours for free: the full chart gives you the rising sign, its exact degree and the rest of your sky.
What the rising sign is
The «vehicle» of the self: where the Sun speaks of your essence, your conscious being and your deeper personality, and the Moon of your inner emotional world, your unconscious being and automatic responses, the rising sign is the filter or style through which you express both outwards: the first impression, the instinctive gesture, the way you behave, begin, assert yourself and move forward, all of which shows in your image, presence and temperament. It is how you react to new situations, almost as a reflex, before conscious reflection steps in: the door through which you enter the world. It also marks the start of the 1st House and orders all twelve houses.
Why you need the exact time
The horizon turns with the Earth: the rising sign advances a whole sign roughly every two hours. A few minutes can change it. That's why we ask for your time exactly as it appears on your birth certificate; without it your planets by sign are still reliable, but the rising sign and houses aren't.
How yours is computed
From your date, time and place we place the horizon using real ephemerides (VSOP87) and Placidus houses —the same method professional astrologers use— all in your browser, without your data ever leaving it.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?
- Not accurately: the rising sign changes every two hours, so without the exact time it can't be fixed. If you only know the day, you can still see your planets by sign, but not the rising sign or houses.
- What's the difference between Sun sign and rising sign?
- Your Sun sign is where the Sun was (your underlying identity); the rising sign is what was climbing over the horizon (how you present). They're almost always different.
- Are 'Ascendant' and 'rising sign' the same?
- Yes. They're two names for the same thing: the degree of the zodiac ascending in the east at the moment of birth.
- How often does the rising sign change?
- It moves through all twelve signs in about 24 hours, so it changes sign roughly every two hours.
- Is it free?
- Yes. The full calculation is free and happens in your browser; we don't store your birth data.
