What a birth chart is (and what it isn't)

It's a map.

A birth chart records the exact position of the sky at the instant you drew your first breath. The Sun, the Moon and the planets are held at the precise degree they occupied in that moment, spread across the twelve houses that divide the heavens according to where and when you were born. That drawing of the sky never existed exactly like this before and will never repeat.

What that drawing describes is not what is going to happen to you but the particular way your energy is organised, the way you perceive, desire, defend yourself, bond and look for meaning. It is a code of possibilities that a whole life takes its time to unfold, sometimes with ease and sometimes through friction, almost always in an order that only makes sense looking back.

A symbolic language, not a system of verdicts

Astrology, practised honestly, is neither predictive nor deterministic but symbolic, and a symbol doesn't close meanings down so much as open them up.

When a tension shows up in a chart, such as a square between two planets or a cluster of energy in a difficult area, you are not reading a sentence but the description of an inner dialogue you probably already recognise, because it has always been there and has expressed itself in different ways at different moments of your life. The chart imposes nothing on you, since everything in it belongs to you and can be lived in very different ways depending on how aware of it you are.

That sets it apart from the Sun-sign horoscope in any magazine, which speaks to millions of people born in the same month at once. A birth chart, by contrast, is drawn for you, with your time, your city and your exact minute of arrival into the world.

What a birth chart is not

• Your horoscopeA horoscope starts from a single piece of data, the Sun sign, while a birth chart crosses dozens, from every planet and every house to every angle between them.
• A personality testIt doesn't file you under a type but shows tensions and balances that live in you at the same time and change their expression over the years.

What a birth chart contains

A complete chart has many more layers than the Sun sign alone can offer, and four of them hold up everything else.

The planets

From the Sun to Pluto, plus Chiron, the North Node and Lilith. Each one stands for a different psychic function, such as identity, emotion, communication, love, will, limits or transformation.

The signs

All twelve, not just yours. They colour each planet according to the energy it passes through, which is why your Mars doesn't act the same in Aries as in Libra.

The houses

Twelve areas of life, from identity to spirituality, that show where each planet unfolds, whether in public life or in intimacy, at work or in relationships, in the body or in the mind.

The aspects

The angles the planets form with one another. They reveal where there is flow and where there is tension, in other words which parts of you reinforce each other and which are in permanent dialogue.

The meaning isn't in any one of these pieces on its own but in the thread that connects them all.

What a birth chart is for

A well-read birth chart offers knowledge of what is in your map, an understanding of why certain things have always been there and, above all, the possibility of doing something with it.

A reading works not when it astonishes you but when you recognise something, that «ah, of course» that explains what you already knew without knowing it. There is no magic in that, because the map describes something that already exists in you and sometimes needs a name to become visible.
