What astrology is (and why it still matters)

Before writing, before philosophical systems and before any institution organised knowledge, human beings looked up, and not out of romanticism but out of need. Reality was complex, unpredictable and at times brutal, and some order had to be found in it in order to move through it. The sky offered what the earth didn't give so clearly, a regularity made of cycles that repeated and patterns that could be learnt, a grammar.

The Sun rose and set, the Moon waxed and waned, and the seasons turned with a faithfulness that could be anticipated. In time, the most patient observers began to notice that the cycles of the sky and those of the earth didn't run separately, because the tides followed the Moon and certain moments of the year brought certain weather, certain illnesses and certain behaviour in animals and in people. What was above and what was below weren't two different worlds but the same world seen from two angles, and that idea came not from magic but from observation accumulated over generations.

As above, so below.

The languages that hold complexity

The trouble with reality is not that it is simple and mysterious but that it is complex and coherent, and the human mind needs tools equal to that complexity in order to live in it.

Logical language is one of those tools, because it analyses, breaks down, separates and measures, and it is enormously useful for everything that can be reduced to parts. But most of life can't be reduced to parts without losing something essential. Love isn't explained by breaking love down, grief isn't better understood by cataloguing its symptoms and a person's identity doesn't fit in a list of attributes.

That is what symbolic languages are for. A symbol doesn't define but contains, and instead of closing meaning down it keeps it alive, so that different people at different moments find in it things that are different and true at the same time. Myth, Kabbalah, the I Ching and the Tarot are attempts at the same task, which is to hold complexity without destroying it and to give shape to what is paradoxical, multiple and alive. Astrology is one of those languages, and perhaps the oldest still in use.

The sky as a mirror

What astrology discovered, or built, depending on how you look at it, is that the celestial bodies could work as archetypes, not as causes but as mirrors.

Saturn

It doesn't make things difficult, but rather stands for everything in reality that is limit, structure, demand, time and maturity.

Venus

It doesn't cause love, but rather is the image of everything in reality that is desire, beauty, bond and worth.

Every planet, every sign and every house is an archetype, a pattern of energy that exists in the cosmos and also in the human psyche, and that is where the real wonder lies.

Some traditions have always seen this clearly. We are not observers who arrived at a ready-made universe and watch it from outside, but part of the very thing we describe. Every birth, whether of a person, an idea or a project, happens inside a specific and unrepeatable configuration of the sky, and that configuration is not a foreign backdrop but the same instant seen from two angles. The sky under which you drew your first breath and you are not two things that coincided, but the same thing told in two ways.

A birth chart doesn't describe something outside you, but the exact shape reality took in that instant, and that shape is you.

Inside and outside are the same map

If as above so below, it is just as true that as within, so without.

A birth chart doesn't only describe your inner world, your way of perceiving, desiring, relating and finding meaning. It also describes your outer world, the people you attract, the situations that repeat and the patterns that show up again and again in your life even as the settings and the characters change. The energy you don't recognise as yours doesn't disappear but gets projected, and what you don't live from within, life brings you from without in the form of people, relationships and circumstances.

A tension in your chart that you haven't consciously integrated will show up in your life as external conflict, as a repeating pattern or as a type of person you keep meeting, and not because the universe is punishing you, but because the chart describes a complete energetic field that includes both what you experience as yours and what you experience as foreign.

That is why astrology is more than self-knowledge. It is also a key to understanding the life around you, why certain things repeat, why certain people enter your story and which part of you is speaking through what happens to you.

A tool, not a verdict

All of this might sound like determinism, but a map doesn't force you down any path. It shows you the territory, and knowing the territory, with its contours, its rivers, its difficult areas and its open spaces, is what lets you move with more awareness, more freedom and less surprise at what appears.

Astrology practised honestly doesn't predict but describes possibilities, and doesn't pass sentence but names patterns. It doesn't say what will happen, but the way your energy tends to organise itself, and that shape can be lived in very different ways depending on how aware of it you are.
